The answer isn't in your rankings report
For the past decade, the default question in digital marketing has been: where do we rank? Page one, position three, featured snippet. These were the markers everyone chased. That question hasn't disappeared, but it's no longer the only one that matters.
AI engines work differently. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini a question, they get a generated answer. Your brand either appears in that answer or it doesn't. There's no position two. There's no "almost made it." It's binary in a way traditional search never was, and the signals that determine whether you're included have very little to do with your keyword rankings.
This isn't speculation. It's where the data is already pointing, and most marketing teams haven't caught up yet.
Earned media is doing more work than most people realize
According to data from Muck Rack's Generative Pulse platform, earned media accounts for 25% of all citations across large language models. That's a significant share, and it's not coming from owned content or paid placements. It's coming from third-party coverage, press mentions, analyst reports, and industry publications that chose to write about you.
The implication is direct: your PR activity is now an input into your AI visibility. Not metaphorically. Literally. The articles that mention your brand, the trade press that covers your product, the analyst who included you in a category overview: these are the sources AI engines pull from when constructing answers.
Research from Amsive puts a number on the impact: earned media distribution produces a median 239% increase in AI citations. That's not a marginal improvement. That's the difference between being cited and being invisible.
Review platforms are acting as authority signals
One of the more concrete findings in recent AI citation research is the role of structured review platforms. Brands with active profiles on G2, Trustpilot, or Capterra are three times more likely to be cited by ChatGPT than brands without them.
This makes sense when you consider how AI engines are trained to evaluate credibility. These platforms aggregate structured, verifiable user feedback at scale. They're the kind of source an AI engine can point to without much risk: the content is consistent, the signal is clear, and the platform itself carries enough authority to reference confidently.
If your brand doesn't have a maintained presence on at least one of these platforms, that's not a minor gap. It's a missing credential in the places AI engines are actively checking.
Not all AI engines pull from the same sources
One of the more nuanced findings from cross-engine research is that different AI tools have different source preferences. ChatGPT tends to favor commercial content and Wikipedia. Perplexity prioritizes Reddit, YouTube, and high-authority publications. Microsoft Copilot gravitates toward Forbes and Gartner. Google AI Overviews leans toward user-generated content.
The overlap in sources across engines sits somewhere between 16% and 59% depending on the query category. But here's what's interesting: brand recommendation overlap is much more consistent, running between 35% and 55%. In other words, even when the sources differ, the brands being recommended tend to converge.
That convergence matters. It suggests there's a core set of brands, in any given category, that have established enough cross-source presence to show up reliably regardless of which AI engine someone uses. Getting into that core set is the objective. As we've written before, AI visibility doesn't translate directly from traditional SEO authority, which is why treating them as the same problem produces poor results.
Three layers that AI engines pull from
The practical way to think about this is in terms of source layers. AI engines aren't pulling from one type of content. They're drawing from a stack.
The first layer is authoritative sources: trade publications, industry analysts, academic references, established media. These carry the most weight and are the hardest to earn. A mention in Gartner or a feature in a respected industry publication lands differently than a generic press release.
The second layer is commercial and editorial content: review platforms, comparison sites, category overviews, structured product or service databases. This is where G2, Capterra, and similar platforms sit. It's more accessible than top-tier earned media but still requires active management and real customer input.
The third layer is user-generated content: Reddit threads, forum discussions, community mentions, YouTube comments. This layer is particularly important for Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. It's also the hardest to influence directly, which means organic community reputation ends up mattering more than most brands expect.
A coherent AI citation strategy requires presence across all three layers, not just the one that's easiest to control. This is also why search strategy has changed in ways that demand a different operating model, one that connects PR, content, and SEO rather than running them as separate functions.
What this means in practice
The actionable part of this is less complicated than it sounds. A few concrete starting points:
Audit your review platform presence. Check whether your brand has active, well-maintained profiles on G2, Trustpilot, and Capterra. If you're in a category where these platforms are relevant, the absence of a profile is costing you citation opportunities right now.
Map your niche editorial footprint. Where does your category actually get covered? Which trade publications, analyst firms, or respected newsletters do decision-makers in your space read? Getting mentioned there, even once and done well, carries more AI citation weight than a hundred generic backlinks.
Produce content that earns references. Original research, category comparisons, clearly structured explainers: these are the types of content other publications link to and AI engines cite. Thin promotional content doesn't make the cut.
Stop treating PR and SEO as separate functions. The most significant structural shift here is organizational. PR knows how to earn third-party coverage. SEO knows how to understand search intent and track visibility. Neither team alone has the full picture for AI citations. The teams that figure out how to work together on this will build an advantage that's genuinely difficult to replicate. It's also worth understanding that AI citation patterns can create loops, so brands that get cited early tend to stay cited, making the compounding effect real in both directions.
The Romanian market context
A recent Search Engine Journal article noted that PR teams have the foundational skills for AI citation strategy but are missing the ambition to unify efforts with SEO. That's a polite way of saying the gap isn't about capability. It's about whether teams recognize the shift fast enough to act on it.
Roughly 90% of Romanian companies haven't put any of this on their radar. That's not a criticism. It reflects where the conversation is globally, just amplified. Most markets are still catching up to the idea that AI visibility is a distinct discipline from traditional search optimization, and that the inputs are fundamentally different.
The opportunity in that gap is real, but it's also time-limited. Citation patterns in AI engines aren't random. They tend to self-reinforce. The brands that establish a presence in the sources AI engines trust will be cited more, which increases their perceived authority, which leads to more citations. The brands that wait will find themselves building against an established pattern rather than into an open space.
The brands that figure this out in the next twelve months won't just have better AI visibility. They'll have a structural advantage that's genuinely hard to close once the patterns set.
