You built a calculator on your site. A free audit tool, a unit converter, an ROI estimator. You did it partly for SEO, for that steady stream of organic traffic. Makes perfect sense. Except now Google does the same thing, right inside the search results page, without sending anyone to your site.
This week, Google expanded Generative UI from AI Mode into AI Overviews. The search engine can now generate interactive tools on the spot: a mortgage calculator comparing loan options, an interactive pH scale visualization, practice quizzes. All without the user clicking through to any website.
At difrnt., we've been tracking this shift since Gemini 3 launched in November 2025. And the question we ask now isn't "what tool should we build for SEO?" but "what tool can we build that Google can't generate on its own?"
What Generative UI is and why it matters now
Generative UI means Google's Gemini models produce fully interactive web pages from a user's query. Not static text, not formatted answers, but functional tools: calculators, simulations, data visualizations.
The feature launched with Gemini 3 in November 2025, initially for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. At Google I/O 2026, Sundar Pichai announced the free expansion, noting that AI Overviews reaches 2.5 billion monthly active users, and AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion.
The critical difference: AI Mode is opt-in (users choose to activate it), but AI Overviews appear automatically on the default results page. That means generated tools reach users who never explicitly sought an AI experience. And the shift from ranking to citation that we've been observing is only accelerating.
The numbers behind the announcement
A recent article on Search Engine Journal details a Google Research study published in February 2026, where generated interfaces were tested head-to-head against real websites. The results deserve close attention.
Generated interfaces were preferred in 90% of direct comparisons against top search results on the main prompt set (Google Research, "Generative UI: LLMs are Effective UI Generators," 2026). On an information-seeking focused set, the score was 73.5% for generative UI versus just 19% for the top organic result.
Custom-built sites by developers performed better, winning 50% of comparisons versus 35.3% for generative UI. But context matters: those developers were paid $100-130 per site, with 3-5 hours of work each. These weren't mature, years-refined tool pages. And Google explicitly acknowledges each new model generation performs significantly better. The error rate dropped from 29% with Gemini 2.0 Flash to zero with Gemini 3.
Meanwhile, Pew Research Center reports that only 8% of visits with an AI summary lead to a click, compared to 15% without. The changing dynamics between organic and paid channels add another layer of complexity for marketing teams.
Which tools are most exposed
Not all tools face the same risk. The difference comes down to what data they use.
Most exposed are tools built on generic inputs and public math. Mortgage calculators, unit converters, educational simulations, practice quizzes. Google has already demonstrated these: a loan comparison calculator, an interactive pH scale, student practice tests. Education and simple financial tools top the risk list.
Most protected are tools that rely on proprietary data, authenticated workflows, or integrations that a page generated on the spot simply can't replicate. An SEO audit that pulls your site's actual data. A pricing calculator based on the client's real costs. A dashboard connected to Google Analytics 4.

Four things you can do right now
This isn't the moment for panic, but it is the moment to look closely at what you've built and what you're planning next.
Check Search Console. Open the new Generative AI report (rolling out gradually since June) and see if your tool pages have lost impressions or clicks. The report doesn't distinguish between a generated interface and a standard AI Overview, so losses might hide in aggregate data. But the trend matters more than absolute precision.
Evaluate each tool through the proprietary data lens. If your tool runs calculations on a public formula, it's vulnerable. If it uses your unique business data or client data, it's much harder to replicate. A unit converter loses. A benchmark based on your own data wins.
Diversify your traffic sources. If a tool depends entirely on organic search, any SERP change hits it directly. Email, social media, paid channels, direct client integrations: all channels that operate outside the AI search ecosystem.
Test before you invest. When proposing a new tool (for yourself or a client), test it with a prompt in AI Mode. If Google generates something comparable in 30 seconds, your investment has a short shelf life.
Google isn't attacking tool websites. It's simply building what users were asking for anyway, faster and without an intermediary click. The real question isn't "will tool page traffic disappear?" but "does your tool have something Google can't generate on the spot?" If the answer is context, real data, client relationships, you're well positioned. If the answer is a public formula in a nice UI, you have a problem that grows with every new model.
