Most SEO strategies treat Europe as "Google with different languages." That assumption misses a significant share of search activity, and the gap is growing.
A recent analysis on Search Engine Journal highlights what happens when you approach European markets as monolithic Google territory: you miss local engines with loyal audiences, marketplaces where product discovery starts and ends without Google, and a regulatory layer that will fundamentally change search data access by 2027.

Local engines are not niche curiosities
Google holds approximately 80% of search market share in Germany. Not 93%, like the global average. The 13-point difference is split between Bing (around 10%) and smaller engines. In Czechia, Seznam.cz controls 12% of the market, with a loyal user base that simply does not use Google for certain types of queries.
Ecosia is growing steadily, particularly in the Nordics and Germany, where environmental awareness shapes even search engine choices. The volume does not rival Google, but the demographic skews toward high purchasing power, which makes it worth paying attention to.
The practical implication: if you run an SEO campaign for the German market and only look at Google Search Console, you are missing around 20% of the search landscape. For Czechia, you could be missing 12% from Seznam alone. At scale, these percentages translate into organic traffic your competitors are already capturing.
Marketplaces are the new search engines
When a European consumer wants to buy shoes, they do not search Google for "men's running shoes." They go directly to Zalando. Or Amazon. Or Idealo, if they are in Germany and want to compare prices.
Product discovery has shifted. For specific product categories, up to 40% of initial searches bypass traditional search engines entirely. Consumers trust marketplace ecosystems for filtering, reviews, and fast delivery.
The implication for search strategy: if you sell products in Europe, optimization must include marketplaces as distinct search channels. Technical SEO for Zalando or Amazon has its own rulebook, and product content needs to be adapted per platform. It is not "Google or marketplace" but both in parallel.
In Romania, we see the same pattern with eMAG. For many product categories, the consumer's search starts and ends on eMAG without Google ever entering the picture. Traditional search analytics does not capture this behavior, which is why many strategies underestimate the marketplace impact.
A marketplace audit differs from a traditional SEO audit. Factors like platform conversion rate, product image quality, listing completeness, and review strategy directly influence visibility in the marketplace's internal search results. Applying the same optimization logic you use for Google misses what actually matters on Zalando or Amazon.
The DMA and court rulings rewriting the rules
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires Google to share anonymized ranking data with competing search engines starting January 2027. This is unprecedented. Until now, search data was the exclusive property of each engine. The DMA turns it into a shared resource, and the downstream effects are still difficult to quantify.
From the UK comes another important signal: the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) allows publishers to opt out of AI Overviews without losing organic visibility. This precedent separates consent for AI content use from organic search performance.
Perhaps the most significant development: a Munich court ruled that Google is legally liable for false information in AI Overviews. These are not neutral algorithmic results but Google's own statements. If this precedent extends to other European jurisdictions, the implications for how Google delivers AI summaries across Europe are substantial.
What you can do now: track the DMA timeline (compliance deadline is January 2027), audit whether AI Overviews are affecting organic traffic on European markets, and monitor how search data is being redistributed as new regulations take effect.
European languages have a problem translation cannot solve
AI models (LLMs) tokenize languages with complex morphology poorly: German, Hungarian, Turkish, Finnish. A compound German word like "Datenschutzgrundverordnung" (the GDPR regulation) consumes 3-4 times more tokens than its English equivalent. This is not just a technical curiosity.
It directly affects how your content appears in AI Overviews, AI citations, and generated responses from language models. Simply translating content written in English does not guarantee equivalent AI visibility in the local language.
For Romanian, the issue is more subtle. While not agglutinative like Hungarian, its complex morphology (declensions, conjugations, articulated forms) means equivalent text consumes more tokens than the English version. At the same context window, an AI model processes less Romanian content than English, which can affect citation quality and completeness.
The strategy that works: content created natively in each language, not just translated. Clear Q&A structures that function well for both traditional engines and AI citation. Specific entities mentioned with correct diacritics and local variants of technical terms.
The European search market is not an extension of the American one with a different domain prefix. It is a fragmented ecosystem with local engines that matter, marketplaces absorbing queries before they reach Google, regulations enforcing transparency, and linguistic challenges that automated translation does not solve.
The starting point: audit where your existing European traffic comes from, check which engines and platforms matter in your target markets, and prepare for the DMA changes in 2027. Adapting early is easier than catching up after the rules shift.
